Here's What Happens When You Hit a Speed Bump at High Speed

Recommended Posts

For when you don't see those speed bumps down the road.

Ever wonder what it'd look like if you drove into a speed bump at full speed rather than slowing down? Wonder no more, because the folks from the Warped Perspective YouTube channel went and found out for you.

The show's host was curious to see how suspension reacts to high-speed impacts from speed bumps. So he took a Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and a set of slow-motion cameras to various types of speed bumps to see exactly what would happen. Most of the body panels have been removed so the camera could see the suspension, giving us a great look at how the impact travels through the car.

What's most interesting is seeing how the tires react to the impacts, and how they work with the suspension to even out bumps. In one high-speed test, the speed bumps are totally absorbed by the tires, leaving the suspension (and the car) undisrupted. Of course, with other types of bumps, the suspension bottoms out and slams the tire into the car. It's a fun watch, that's for sure.

This video is a follow-up to a video the channel did back in 2017 testing pothole impacts at high speed, using the same car and camera equipment. The results from that video are equally spectacular.
